Ajeno a la moda del cine español del momento, Summers debutó como
director con una estupenda película que ahondaba en las aristas de dos
relatos cotidianos, dos historias románticas tan sencillas como la vida
misma: el rosa lo representan dos jovenzuelos enamorados y el amarillo,
dos ancianos a quienes sus familias impiden relacionarse. Summers,
emotivo, tierno e irónico al tiempo, ofrece una hondura dramática que
abandonaría en sus películas de los años setenta.

Por su notable perspicacia a la hora de saber ver la poesía en
los intersticios de las grisáceas llanuras de lo cotidiano, es la ópera
prima de Manolo Summers una película que más parece salida del universo
cinematográfica de la Nouvelle vague que no del caletre de un joven debutante español. Del rosa al amarillo
es ya de por sí un título que invita a pensar en la tierna sensibilidad
de un François Truffaut. Y las entrañables cavilaciones de sus
protagonistas, sobre todo las del pequeño Guillermo (Pedro Díez del
Corral), recuerdan a las de los antihéroes del director francés. Si en Los cuatrocientos golpes
Truffaut llevaba a cabo el retrato de su propia adolescencia a través
de la figura de Antoine Doinel, algo muy parecido podría decirse de lo
que intenta Summers con su díptico.
From Pink to Yellow
Oblivious to the
fashion of Spanish cinema of the moment, Summers made his debut as a
director with a wonderful film that delved into the edges of two
everyday stories, two romantic stories as simple as life itself: Pink is represented by two young lovers in love and yellow, two elderly people whose families prevent them from relating. Summers, emotional, tender and ironic at the time, offers a striking dramatic depth.
This black and white movie is a wonderful rarity. Though pretty unknown it's one of my all time favorites.
Both stories, completely independent, are focused on love and how madly can we act when we're in love, no matter our age.
The first one is about first love, with all its magic and foolishness, thru a tween boy's look. The school and street playing scenes take you to an old looking children's world, which is fun to see from today.
The second, which is much shorter but even better, takes place within an asylum where men are set aside from women. So they, old people, have to conceal their relationship and make the most of the few moments they can get close to each other. The surprising and sad ending makes you smile from deep inside your heart.
Sounds weird: no murders, no shots, no monsters, no clowns, just a few simple people making their choices. It never gets slow or boring though, but grabbing and touchy. (imdb review by pinto)
