Pierre, un arquitecto parisino de mediana edad, no puede decidirse a abandonar a su esposa, Catherine, y a su hijo adolescente, Bertrand, para mudarse a Túnez con su joven amante, Hélène. Pierre ha llegado a una encrucijada en la vida, tanto en sentido figurativo como literal: conduciendo a toda velocidad por una carretera rural en su Alfa Romeo, se desvía para evitar un camión parado en el camino, y el coche se sale de la carretera, rodando en el aire y finalmente expulsándolo a un pastizal. A la espera de una ambulancia, comienza a alucinar con la gente que lo rodea...

[...] Romy Schneider interpreta a Helene, la amante de un señor adulto (Michel Piccoli) muy atribulado que tiene un accidente de auto y mientras este se desarrolla va recordando momentos de su vida: su ex-esposa, hijos, su mundo afectivo que está a punto de terminar. Con una modernidad narrativa que hoy resulta mas moderna que nunca, y precursora de un cine que no ha parado de indagar por esa vía, la historia de Pierre Berard, cincuentón que vive apurado, sigue conmoviendo hoy. Una narración ágil que va aportando datos para construir un rompecabezas que nos muestra una vida más, tan cercana y posible a la de muchos de los habitantes de esta tierra. La tercera figura de la historia la interpreta Lea Massari,una actriz italiana hoy olvidada que fue una de las grandes actrices del mejor tiempo del cine europeo,el que va desde el final de la Segunda Guerra hasta comienzo de los años noventa. Las cosas de la vida es un clásico que merece ser visto una y otra vez.

The Things of Life

Pierre, a middle-aged architect in Paris, can't make up his mind to leave behind his estranged wife, Catherine, and teenage son, Bertrand, to move to Tunis with his young lover, Hélène. Pierre has arrived at a crossroads in life, both figuratively and literally: speeding along a country road in his Alfa Romeo, he swerves to avoid a stalled truck in his path, and the car flies off the road, rolling in midair and finally expelling him onto the grass. Waiting for an ambulance, he flashes on people close to him...

Claude Sautet creates an understatedly haunting, sophisticated, and insightful portrait of emotional attachment, indecision, and intimacy in Les choses de la vie. Sautet figuratively reflects Pierre's emotional uncertainty as he struggles with the inertia of commitment and a new life with Hélène, unable to sever the bonds of common history associated with his failed marriage to Catherine: Hélène's self-imposed exclusion (and unshared family memories) from the Bérard island home in Ré; Pierre's procrastination over a visa application for a long-term business trip to Tunisia; his fixated preoccupation with a damaged table in the summer house; his impulsively written, unaddressed letter to Hélène that reveals his innate ambivalence. Inevitably, as Pierre unconsciously ponders his unfinished household tasks - the trivial "things of life" that bind him to his estranged family - what is revealed is a resigned longing for a lifetime of irretrievable memories and an irreconcilable sentiment of profound regret.
