Cuando su esposa muere, Lassefar lleva a su hijo de 12 años, Pelle, desde su casa en Suecia a Dinamarca en busca de una vida mejor. Al ser contratados como trabajadores en una gran granja, padre e hijo se someten a numerosas tribulaciones, incluyendo prejuicios contra los inmigrantes y enfrentamientos con los más poderosos que ellos mismos, tanto en el sentido físico como en el social. En el transcurso de un año, el joven Pelle aprende lo que se necesita para sobrevivir en un mundo duro y despiadado.

La áspera existencia en la granja es impulsada por el flujo de las estaciones. El trabajo es duro y los trabajadores de la granja son oprimidos y tratados cruelmente por el gerente y su aprendiz. A través de las estaciones de varios años, Pelle madura lentamente y observa la vida de la gente en este remoto campo. Pelle the Conqueror

When his wife dies, Lassefar takes his 12-year-old son Pelle from their home in Sweden to Denmark in search of a better life. Signing on as laborers at a large farm, father and son undergo numerous trials, including prejudice against immigrants and run-ins with those more powerful than themselves in both the physical and the social sense. Over the course of a year, young Pelle learns what it takes to survive in a harsh and unforgiving world.

The harsh existence on the farm is driven by the flow of the seasons. The work is hard and the farm hands are oppressed and cruelly treated by the manager and his trainee. Through the seasons of several years, Pelle slowly matures and observes the lives of the folk in this remote countryside. Their stories become the various threads in the fabric of Pelle’s maturing perspective. The colorful cast of subsidiary characters are introduced and interwoven smoothly. Pelle remains the center of the story throughout and all of the subplots are seen from his vantage point and related to his coming-of-age.
