Cuando Thérèse Desqueyroux es absuelta por un tribunal de haber
intentado envenenar a su marido Bernard, recapitula los acontecimientos
que la condujeron a ser acusada de intento de asesinato. La gris y
monótona vida provinciana y unas convenciones sociales asfixiantes la
llevaron a contraer matrimonio con un hombre anódino e inspido, al cual
sólo le preocupaba mantener sus propiedades y el buen nombre de la

(...) Más allá del mayor o menos grado de fidelidad existente en
torno a la novela de François Mauriac –partícipe del guión junto a su
hermano George y el propio Franju-, lo cierto es que lo que uno aprecia
de manera muy especial en Thérèse Desqueyroux, es la capacidad
del director galo para transmitir al espectador ese estado constante de
desasosiego. De poner en primer término de la pantalla la podredumbre de
un sistema de clases, de un contexto cerrado, puritano e hipócrita. De
unas convenciones que ahogan la libertad del individuo –tal y como

The film begins with the acquittal of
Thérèse Desqueyroux who’s been charged with the attempted murder of her
husband, Bernard. We are not privy to the trial–instead the story picks
up as Thérèse leaves the deserted Palais de Justice in the company of
her lawyer. Thérèse’s father waits for them in the distance, and while
an acquittal should be good news, Thérèse’s father doesn’t greet his
daughter. Instead he shuffles her off in a chauffeur driven car
admonishing her that she’s already damaged the family enough.
On the drive back to her home,
Thérèse recalls the events that led to the accusation
of attempted murder, and it’s a stroke of irony that the evidence of the
intended victim, Bernard, is the one thing that saves
Thérèse from imprisonment. The film segues in flashbacks to Thérèse’s moody youth and
idyllic days spent with her companion, Anne...
