Just north of London live Wendy, Andy, and their twenty-something twins, Natalie and Nicola. Wendy clerks in a shop, leads aerobics at a primary school, jokes like a vaudevillian, agrees to waitress at a friend's new restaurant and dotes on Andy, a cook who forever puts off home remodeling projects, and with a drunken friend, buys a broken down lunch wagon.

Natalie, with short neat hair and a snappy, droll manner, is a plumber; she has a holiday planned in America, but little else. Last is Nicola, odd man out: a snarl, big glasses, cigarette, mussed hair, jittery fingers, bulimic, jobless, and unhappy. How they interact and play out family conflict and love is the film's subject.

Grandes ambiciones

La vida de tres parejas, de diferentes grupos sociales, alrededor de una anciana de carácter irreductible, le sirve al director para realizar un fiel retrato de la sociedad británica de la época.

Mike Leigh traza una mirada implacable, sin concesiones, al Reino Unido de Margaret Thatcher. Bajo el manto de la comedia costumbrista, tomando a una pequeña y variopinta fauna de clases sociales distintas como núcleo humano representativo, Leigh da a luz una obra cáustica y demoledora, emplea el retrato realista como arma de guerra para reflejar -criticar- una sociedad ahogada en sus propias contradicciones. La película cuenta con un diálogo ingenioso, actores idóneos en su naturalidad y un ritmo narrativo adecuado.(El País)

 Slice-of-life look at a sweet working-class couple in London, Shirley and Cyril, his mother, who's aging quickly and becoming forgetful, mum's ghastly upper-middle-class neighbors, and Cyril's pretentious sister and philandering husband. Shirley wants a baby, but Cyril, who reads Marx and wants the world to be perfect, is reluctant. Cyril's mum locks herself out and must ask her snooty neighbors for help. Then Cyril's sister Valerie stages a surprise party for mum's 70th birthday, a disaster from start to finish. Shirley holds things together, and she and Cyril may put aside her Dutch cap after all.

Aunque ya veinteañeros, el simplón Colin y su hermano sarcástico y manipulador, Mark, todavía viven con sus padres en una vivienda municipal en el barrio del East End en Londres. Colin y Mark se comportan como adolescentes mientras que la familia sufre el desempleo, la pobreza y las penurias de la vida en la década de 1980 en Gran Bretaña. También está Coxy, un skinhead violento que se hace amigo de Colin, y la tía rica Bárbara, que le ofrece un trabajo a Colin y desata tensiones familiares que finalmente estallan en celos y conflictos.

Este gran film fue uno de los últimos que hizo Mike Leigh para la televisión. El título Meantime significa "mientras tanto", pero también es un juego de palabras entre la palabra mean, que significa "tacaño" o "mezquino" en inglés británico, y time que significa "tiempo". Tiempos Mezquinos podría ser un título en castellano.

Adult brothers Mark and Colin Pollock still live with their parents Frank and Mavis Pollock in a small apartment in the projects of London's east end in what is a collective depressed and unhappy existence. The three men of the household are all on the dole, each doing little to find gainful employment. Between the brothers, Mark is the smart aleck, who calls his parents by their given names to irk them, and who hangs out with a bunch of hooligans as he refers to himself and his friends, such as a skinhead named Coxy. Although never medically diagnosed as such, Colin is seemingly emotionally slow. Colin likes to hang out with Mark and his friends in his want to be accepted, especially as Mark tells him that a neighborhood girl named Hayley is interested him. The family rarely socializes with Mavis' sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and John, who live a middle to upper middle class and seemingly perfect existence in the suburbs of Chigwell. Although not telling them to their face, John dislikes his relations by marriage, believing especially Mark to be brash and trashy. A unilateral act by Barbara leads to many issues within the extended family coming to the surface, most specifically the true happiness of the marriage between Barbara and John, and what Colin is truly looking for to be happy in life.
