Verano en Berlín

Dos mujeres jóvenes, amigas y vecinas, intentan disfrutar de la vida a pesar de los muchos problemas que ésta les plantea. Una es madre de un niño y tiene algún problema con el alcohol; la otra es una joven decidida que se ocupa de cuidar ancianos y busca un hombre con el que compartir su vida. El tono ligero y sin dramatismos y el cariño especial hacia sus dos protagonistas no esconde la melancolía de este retrato de un Berlín desconocido y al mismo tiempo cercano. ~~ Festival de San Sebastián

La película de Andreas Dresen tiene un aire grato e improvisado que, junto con el guión profundamente humano de Wolfgang Kohlhaase, brinda unos momentos gratos al espectador. Todos los personajes en conflicto parecen muy reales en su variado desorden, y se observan con un entendimiento que está muy lejos de las fórmulas cansinas del cine comercial. Incluso los "pacientes" de Nike son tratados con un humor afectuoso que nos recuerda que, nos guste o no, todos terminaremos en forma similar, si tenemos la suerte (o la mala suerte) de vivir tanto tiempo. Dresen captura el ritmo de vida obstinado pero a veces inesperado, vivido con los recursos emocionales y financieros suficientes para sobrevivir. Una buena bebida ayuda cuando uno está sin trabajo o desconectado románticamente, algo que Katrin sabe muy bien. Dresen y Kohlhasse también presentan vívidamente las intrigantes tensiones que existen entre los antiguos alemanes orientales y occidentales -una fuente de muchas bromas mordaces- que agregan picante a la sabrosa comida. ~~ David Noh, traducción de M.Buffo.

Summer in Berlin

Summer in Berlin details the friendship between sometime lovers Nike (Nadja Uhl), who cares for homebound senior citizens, and Katrin (Inka Friedrich), who has a 12-year-old son (Vincent Redetzki) and is searching for an elusive job in window display. The feverishly hot German season they spend together has Nike falling in love with trucker Ronald (Andreas Schmidt), a frustrated Katrin falling into alcoholism, and Max desperately trying to impress a girl who has caught his fancy.

Andreas Dresen's film has an ingratiating, improvisatory airiness to it which, along with Wolfgang Kohlhaase's deeply humane screenplay, affords much viewer satisfaction. All of the conflicted characters seem very real in their varied messiness, and are observed with an understanding that is miles away from Hollywood's incessant formulae. Even Nike's doddering charges are treated with an affectionate humor which reminds us that, like it or not, we'll all end up in a similar boat, if we're lucky (or unlucky) to live that long. Dresen captures the dogged yet sometimes unexpected rhythm of life lived with just enough emotional and financial resources to get by. A good stiff drink helps when one is out of a job or romantically down, something Katrin explores with gusto. Dresen and Kohlhasse also vividly present the intriguing tensions which exist between former West and East Germans--a source of many mordant jokes--that add flavor to their tasty, characterful brew. Andreas Hofer's freewheeling camerawork and Pascal Comelade's tinkly music score lend apt support. ~~ David Noh
