El último de los Seis cuentos morados de R. Frédéric lleva una vida burguesa; es socio en una pequeña empresa de París y está felizmente casado con Helene, una maestra que espera su segundo hijo. Por las tardes, Frederic sueña despierto con otras mujeres, pero no tiene intención de hacer nada. Un día, Chloe, que había sido la amante de un viejo amigo, comienza a pasar por su oficina. Love Before the Evening
The last of R's Six Coral Tales. Frederic leads a bourgeois life;
he is a partner in a small Paris office and is happily married to
Helene, a teacher expecting her second child. In the afternoons,
Frederic daydreams about other women, but has no intention of taking any
action. One day, Chloe, who had been a mistress of an old friend,
begins dropping by his office. They meet as friends, irregularly in the
afternoons, till eventually Chloe decides to seduce Frederic, causing
him a moral dilemma.
Unlike previous films in this series, its hero is married - in contrast
to the protagonists of the earlier films, who were merely contemplating
marriage - and resisting the temptation of an affair, almost out of
perversity. Equally, the film is a homage to the late afternoon - seen
by R as a sunny parallel to 3am and the dark night of the soul -
the time Bernard Verley eccentrically chooses as his regular lunch time.
A formal, elegant examination of someone puzzled by marital fidelity,
Love Before the Evening is a wonderfully cool and lucid exposition of the
twists and turns of its hero's thoughts. ~~ Timeout
