Arsenevich: Jules Dassin - Du rififi chez les hommes (1955)

París. Tras permanecer recluido cinco años en prisión, Tony “el estefanés”, enfermo, sale dispuesto a cambiar de vida; sin embargo, el hecho de que encuentre a su antigua pareja, Mado, convertida en la amante de otro hombre, le hará inmiscuirse en el atraco a una importante joyería.

Jules Dassin, director estadounidense que tuvo que emigrar hacia Europa después de ser incluido en la lista negra de Hollywood durante la “caza de brujas” del senador McCarthy, firmó su gran obra maestra con Du rififi chez les hommes, cumbre ineludible del cine negro europeo. El título se refiere a un vocablo francés, rififi, que significa “pelea”, “camorra” o “bronca”, tal y como nos ilustra la cabaretera de L'âge d'or en su brillante número musical.

La película, que es realista, elegante y con una sobria puesta en escena, trasciende las fronteras del noir convencional para erigirse en una auténtica y funesta tragedia clásica. Rififi

Out of prison after a five-year stretch, jewel thief Tony turns down a quick job his friend Jo offers him, until he discovers that his old girlfriend Mado has become the lover of local gangster Pierre Grutter during Tony’s absence. After making such American noir classics as Brute Force and The Naked City, the blacklisted director Jules Dassin went to Paris and embarked on his masterpiece: a twisting, turning tale of four ex-cons who hatch one last glorious robbery in the City of Light.
