Un maestro es destinado a un lejano pueblito en el desierto en donde los pobladores están obsesionados con un misterioso tesoro enterrado y sus hijos están condenados a vagar por el desierto.

El Haimoune es un cuento sufí, una película poema, una búsqueda de las raíces, del amor y de la libertad. Un joven maestro llega a una lejana población en medio del desierto para trabajar con niños que nunca han ido a la escuela. En el pueblo, además de los niños, sólo quedan los ancianos, las mujeres, y una bella y misteriosa joven. Todos los hombres se han ido a buscar el final del desierto. El maestro se deja embrujar por las doradas dunas de arena y por el canto andaluz de sus balizadores.

En este cuento, la magia y la realidad se entremezclan para cantar la belleza del desierto. El cineasta Nacer Khemir, a través de la delicada atención prestada a la composición de los planos y las secuencias, tratadas como cuadros, y de la poesía de su escritura, rinde homenaje al esplendor perdido de la cultura árabe. Wanderers of the Desert

A teacher is assigned to a remote desert village that is obsessed with a mysterious buried treasure and whose children are cursed to wander the desert.

Khemir creates an exotic world with Wanderers of the Desert when a young teacher arrives to take over a village school isolated in the shimmering desert. Reminiscent of the best Iranian films of the 1970s in its use of color and setting, it also has something of the wit, cruelty and ambiguity of the Arabian Nights. Legendary figures materialize out of wells and the desert itself, groups of children hurry through a labyrinth of underground corridors, the teacher is whisked away to a mysterious rendezvous and never returns. Nothing is really explained; Khemir merely shows how legend, tradition and fate hang heavily over this community and he does so with a richly expressive visual style aided by superb use of color. Especially notable is the way the protagonists are always placed against sun-scorched landscapes in which nothing is quite what it seems, like the marvelous moment when everyone gathers around a ship that has mysteriously washed up in the desert sand.
