La
película narra el agotador viaje psicológico y físico que emprenden
cuatro habitantes de la ciudad por un río en los bosques del estado de
Georgia en EEUU. A instancias del aventurero Lewis, los menos
aventureros Ed, Bobby y Drew aceptan navegar en canoa por un tramo
recóndito del río antes de que un proyecto de represa arruine la región.
Tras las advertencias de los empobrecidos lugareños, y del encuentro
musical de Drew con un niño mudo, los cuatro hombres se embarcan en su
viaje, exultantes por la belleza de la naturaleza y la emoción inicial
de los rápidos. Al día siguiente, sin embargo, las cosas empiezan a
ponerse feas...

es una película magistral. Y elegir en ella una sola secuencia es
literalmente imposible. El momento que todo el mundo recuerda, claro (y a
su pesar), es el de la violación y posterior aparición de Reynolds
armado con su arco, pero también el del banjo, o el del accidente en el
río, o la imagen final. Momentos todos ellos descarnados, salvajes, ante
los que no se puede uno quedar impasible. La rabia y la impotencia se
apoderan del espectador, mientras observa hasta donde puede llegar el
gran cine de aventuras cuando se deja de lugares comunes y de su deseo
de agradar.

The
movie recounts the grueling psychological and physical journey taken by
four city slickers down a river in the backwoods of Georgia. At the
behest of Lewis, the less adventuresome Ed, Bobby, and Drew agree to
canoe down an uncharted section of the river before a dam project ruins
the region. After warnings from the grimy, impoverished locals, and
Drew's tuneful yet ominous "Dueling Banjos" encounter with a mute inbred
boy, the four men embark on their trip, exulting in the beauty of
nature and the initial thrill of the rapids. The next day, however,
things begin to take a turn for the worse.
"The
movie contains riveting performances by Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight,
two actors most don't much consider for their acting abilities, as well
as good work from Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox. The sense of dread created
is palatable thanks in large part to the hillbilly characters who
populate the film, particularly the two in the notorious rape sequence.
While watching the film, I had trouble in several instances discerning
what was going on in key scenes. Though critical at first, I soon
appreciated this effect, as it must be the same disorientation being
felt by the characters in the film. Deliverance is a wonderfully
crafted film with fine performances that shows an all encompassing view
of both human nature and nature in general."
