La habitación del hijo

Una familia unida vive en una ciudad pequeña al norte de Italia. El padre, Giovanni; la madre, Paola, y sus dos hijos adolescentes: Irene, la mayor, y Andrea, el pequeño. Giovanni es psicoanalista. En su consulta, situada al lado de su apartamento, sus pacientes le confían su neurosis, que contrastan con la calma de su propia existencia. Su vida se rige por una serie de costumbres o manías: leer, escuchar música, aislarse y agotarse haciendo largas carreras por la ciudad. Un domingo por la mañana, un paciente llama a Giovanni por una urgencia. No puede salir a correr con su hijo, tal y como le había propuesto; Andrea sale a bucear con sus amigos, pero no volverá...

Giovanni ( Nanni Moretti) es un psicoanalista de éxito. Su mujer trabaja en una gran editorial. Son un matrimonio perfecto. Tienen unos hijos maravillosos, con los que mantienen una relación ideal.
Giovanni ha quedado para correr con su hijo, pero uno de sus pacientes lo llama y debe atenderle.
Andrea se va a hacer submarinismo con sus amigos..... Algo terrible va a ocurrir y va a cambiar la vida de Giovanni...

La banda sonora es una maravilla,( By this River-Brian Eno). Tiene otro tema al principio de Michael Nyman.
Ganadora de la Palma de Oro en el festival de Cannes.

The Son's Room

Director and co-writer Moretti plays Giovanni, the middle-aged paterfamilias of an educated, middle-class Italian household; he is a psychoanalyst, presiding with creeping professional midlife ennui over a querulous clientele. His beautiful wife Paola, played by Laura Morante, works in an art publishing house and is the mother of two blooming teenage children: Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice) and Irene (Jasmine Trinca).

The essential happiness of their bourgeois existence is the happiness that, in the Russian phrase, writes white on the page. Its unassuming contentment is all but invisible, though at work the increasingly disenchanted Giovanni has just one thing in common with his patients: a growing conviction that he isn't doing them much good. It is into this scenario that a horrible fate intrudes himself. Giovanni is forced through semi-sincere concern to make an unprecedented "house-call" to a patient, resulting in the cancellation of a proposed run with Andrea; his son goes diving instead and dies in an accident...
