Con la mirada puesta en un futuro aparentemente sin esperanza, los hermanastros Carl y Jessie se rebelan contra los lazos que los unen a su pueblo moribundo mediante un acto de amor a la vez tierno y traumático que obliga a sacar a la luz una gran cantidad de verdades y recriminaciones. Jessica, la hija mayor de un minero convertido en agricultor, tiene una aventura con su hermanastro, y las cosas se complican aún más cuando ella queda embarazada.

[...] Esta película consigue centrarse en el tema tabú del incesto sin ser sensacionalista en lo más mínimo, y ésa es solo una de sus sorprendentes facetas. Un drama descarnado en blanco y negro ambientado (y filmado) íntegramente en el sureste del estado de Ohio, entre granjas, estaciones de servicio, bares y casas sencillas de la zona, cuenta con una fotografía hermosa y memorable. No se trata en absoluto de cine tipo "verité", sino de una historia extremadamente matizada y melancólica de dos amantes que pueden o no ser hermanos (dependiendo de la historia que crean de cada uno de los padres) con excelentes tomas de colinas neblinosas, graneros enmohecidos, cenas en penumbra y caminos polvorientos.

Staring into seemingly hopeless futures, half-siblings Carl and Jessie rebel against the ties that bind them to their dying town and to each other through an act of love both tender and traumatic that forces a generation of hard truths and recriminations out into the open. Jessica, the eldest daughter of a coal miner-turned-farmer, has a fling with her half-brother, and things become even more complicated when she becomes pregnant.

A stark, black and white drama set (and filmed) entirely in southeastern Ohio, amidst the farms, gas stations, bars and simple homes of the area, it's filled with beautiful and memorable photography. This is not a "verité"-type outing at all, but an extremely nuanced, melancholy tale of two lovers who may or may not be brother and sister (depending on which story they believe from which parent) with stunning set pieces on foggy hills, in musty barns, dimly-lit dinner tables, on dusty roads.
