En el Japón medieval, la madre y la esposa de un guerrero esperan su
vuelta del frente. Sobreviven engañando a los soldados perdidos en los
campos, a los que asesinan para luego vender sus pertenencias. Al saber
que su hijo ha caído en el frente, la madre pone en marcha un diabólico
plan para que su nuera no sea seducida por un joven soldado y permanezca
con ella para siempre. Por ello, oculta su cara con la espeluznante
máscara de un guerrero que mató con sus propias manos, pero se
horrorizará al ver que no puede desprenderse de ella...
El título de la película se traduce aproximadamente como "mujer demonio", y es un título adecuado para esta historia. Aunque la película no contiene ningún demonio real ni otras criaturas míticas, el verdadero terror proviene de las acciones de los personajes, y la película triunfa como película de terror en ese sentido. La ambientación, que consiste en una enorme zona cubierta de juncos, añade peso a la reivindicación de la película en el género de terror también y el lugar proporciona un escenario realmente impresionante para que esta historia tenga lugar. La película también cuenta con un pozo negro, que las mujeres utilizan para arrojar los cuerpos de los samuráis que matan, lo que añade un elemento de fantasía e inventiva a la historia. As a feudal war rages in 14th-century Japan, those left behind are
struggling to survive. The wife and the mother of a soldier make their
meager living by preying upon hapless samurai who come their way,
killing them and selling their armor for food. When a friend of the
soldier returns to the women's hut, they learn the fate of their
soldier, and are forced to deal with this survivor. Tensions build as
the young widow gives in to her loneliness, and the older woman fears
abandonment, feels jealousy, and plots revenge.
The title of the film roughly translates into English as 'demon woman',
and that is an apt title for this story. Although the film doesn't
contain any actual demons or other mythical creatures, the real horror
comes from the character actions and the film succeeds as a horror film
in that way. The atmospheric location, which consists of a huge area
covered in reeds, adds weight to film's claim to the horror genre also
and the location provides a truly stunning set for this story to take
place. The film also features a dark pit, which the women use to dump
the bodies of the Samurai they kill, which adds to the fantasy and
inventive element of the story. The film is cinematic poetry on many
levels, from the bleak yet beautiful cinematography, to the elements of
the location mentioned - all the way down to it's central piece of
imagery - the mask itself. The mask is the film's centrepiece, and the
parts where it features are the most memorable of the movie.
