Una mujer, viuda de un hombre enviado a la guerra, vive su vida
sirviendo a sus suegros. En la sociedad japonesa después de la Segunda
Guerra Mundial este tipo de situación para las mujeres era bastante
común. Hideko Takamine en Midareru, dirigida por Mikio Naruse, y Setsuko Hara en Tokyo Monogatari, dirigida por Yasujiro Ozu interpretan a mujeres en tales situaciones, aunque con ciertas diferencias.
Reiko (Takamine Hideko) es viuda del que hubiese sido el heredero de una pequeña tienda de bebidas en una pequeña ciudad. La tienda fue destruida por los bombardeos durante la guerra, pero ella fue quien la reconstruyó después de la guerra y lo hizo aún más grande que antes gracias a 18 años de trabajo duro. Ella es una mujer que se acerca a la edad mediana, todavía bonita, pero que nunca ha considerado tener otra pareja. Pero cuando su cuñado Koji - que tiene 18 años menos que ella - confiesa su amor por ella, su determinación sufre un cambia brusco...

Yearning
A woman, whose husband went off to war and was killed shortly after
their marriage, lives her life as a widow serving her parents-in-law. In
Japanese society after World War II, such women were not few. Takamine
Hideko in Midareru directed by Mr. Naruse Mikio, and Hara Setsuko in Tokyo Monogatari directed by Ozu Yasujiro play women in such situations, though in quite a different way.
Reiko (Takamine Hideko) is a widow of a would-be heir of a small
beverage shop in a small city. The shop was destroyed by the air-raids
during the war, but she was the one who rebuilt it after the war and
made it even larger than before through 18 years of hard work. She is a
woman approaching middle age, still beautiful but who has never
considered having another romantic partner. But when her brother-in-law,
Koji – who is 18 years younger than her - confesses his love for her,
her firm mind suddenly changes...
