Una playa tan bonita

Una tarde lluviosa, un joven triste llega a un pueblo costero del norte de Francia. Toma una habitación en el único hotel abierto, una modesto establecimiento manejado por la sobrina del anciano dueño, quien se encuentra completamente paralizado y mudo, y que parece reconocer al recién llegado...

Se trata de una película muy oscura con ese desencanto que marca el cine francés de posguerra. Abrumados por el peso del destino, los personajes de esta historia ya no tienen esperanza, al menos para ellos mismos. No hay ni un solo rayo de sol en el horizonte, literal o figurativamente, ya que llueve continuamente, una fuerte lluvia que empapa todo y parece querer arrastrarse por todas partes. La trama es original porque nada se explica a primera vista: si entendemos rápidamente que este joven vivió allí en el pasado, las pistas se destilan en gotas y sólo vislumbramos cosas. Es solo hacia el final de la película que aprenderemos toda su historia desde su propia boca.

Riptide

On a rainy evening, a sad young man arrives on a coastal village in northern France. He takes a room in the only open hotel, a modest house run by the niece of the former owner, who is himself completely paralyzed and mute and seems to recognize de new arrival.

This is a very dark film with the typical disenchantment that marks French post-war cinema. Overwhelmed by the heavy weight of fate, the characters in this story no longer have hope, at least for themselves. There is not a single ray of sunshine on the horizon, literally or figuratively since it rains continuously, a heavy rain that soaks everything and seems to want to creep in everywhere. The plot is original because nothing is explained at first glance: we quickly understand that this young man lived there in the past, the clues are then distilled in drops and we only catch glimpses of things. It is only towards the end of the film that we will learn his whole story. Gérard Philipe is perfect in this rather taciturn role.
