Contrabando

 En San Francisco, dos inspectores de policía están de servicio cuando un taxista deshonesto, con la ayuda de un maletero sin escrúpulos, se las arregla para robar la maleta de un coleccionista de antigüedades antes de atropellar a un policía, cuyo último acto es matar allí a tiros a ese taxista. Los inspectores descubren que una estatuilla en la maleta contiene heroína. Mientras tanto, un gángster psicópata, su malvado mentor y su conductor alcohólico tienen el trabajo de recoger los otros cargamentos de heroína, escondidos en el equipaje de viajeros desprevenidos. Todo va bien hasta que intentan recuperar la heroína embutida en una muñeca japonesa. Una niña y su encantadora y joven madre tienen la muñeca, pero cuando los ladrones se apoderan de ella, descubren que la heroína ha desaparecido misteriosamente.

Contrabando, parcialmente basada en una serie de televisión del mismo nombre, comienza como una investigación policial típica de contrabando de heroína, pero se vuelve mucho más interesante al convertirse en un estudio intrigante de las personalidades de los delincuentes involucrados. El director Don Siegel utiliza su cámara al máximo efecto para capturar a San Francisco de mediados de siglo, utilizando muchos lugares populares que ya no están allí hoy, un registro del pasado, y culmina con una emocionante persecución en coche que precede por una década a la más conocida en la película Bullitt.

 In San Francisco, two police inspectors are on the case when a rogue taxi driver, with the help of a rogue porter, manages to steal the suitcase of an antiques collector before running down a cop, whose dying gesture is to shoot the cabbie dead. The inspectors discover that a statuette in the suitcase contains heroin. Meanwhile, a psychopathic gangster, his malignant mentor and their dipsomaniac driver have the job of picking up the other heroin shipments, hidden in the luggage of unsuspecting travelers. All goes well until they attempt to retrieve the heroin stuffed in a Japanese doll. A little girl and her lovely young mother have the doll, but when the crooks take possession of it, they find that the heroin has mysteriously vanished.

The Lineup, influenced by the earlier TV series of the same name, starts off as a typical police investigation of smuggled heroin but becomes far more interesting after it segues into an intriguing character study of the criminals involved.  Director Don Siegel uses his camera to maximum effect to capture mid-century San Francisco, using many popular locations that are no longer there today, a record of the past, and for good measure he throws in an exciting car chase which predates by a decade the better-known one in the movie Bullitt.
