Married civil servant Paul and single saleswoman Paula meet one day in a
cellar bar and start a passionate romance. However, their love affair
is soon clouded by reality and the two have to make a decision: Can they
be together despite all the obstacles?
Die Legende von Paul und Paula was originally threatened with a
performance ban until East German President Erich Honecker personally
decided to release the film. With about three million viewers Die Legende von Paul und Paula became a great success all over the GDR.
The two leading actors Glatzeder and Domröse escaped to the West in the early 1980s, which meant that the film was no longer shown on GDR television. Only art house cinemas showed the love story occasionally until it was shown again in 1993 on the 20th anniversary and was released in German cinemas.
Die Legende von Paul und Paula was especially popular in the East and became a cult film, which led to many allusions in other German films. In Berlin in 1998 a street was even named after the lovers. The section of Berlin's Rummelsburger Ufer where the scene with the freight barge was shot has been called Paul-und-Paula-Ufer since 1998. Since 2010, Progress Film Distribution has also been awarding the Paula Prize in reference to the film.
