El profesor de música Alec Guinness alquila un departamento en Londres a la dulce anciana Katie Johnson. Le dice que, de vez en cuando, varios otros músicos visitarán para ensayar. Deliciosa y encantadora comedia negra impecablemente facturada en los Estudios Ealing de la mano del interesante Alexander MacKendrick. En ella encontramos las habituales constantes que definieron a las producciones salidas de los míticos estudios: argumentos ingeniosos, fina ironía, diálogos chispeantes, humor negro, personajes pintorescos y situaciones absurdas.

Music professor Alec Guinness rents a London flat from sweet old lady Katie Johnson. He tells her that, from time to time, several other musicians will visit in order to rehearse. In truth, Guinness can't play a note, nor can his visitors: he's a criminal mastermind, holding court over a gang of thieves, including the likes of punkish Peter Sellers, homicidal Herbert Lom and punchdrunk Danny Green. The gang uses Guinness' flat as headquarters as they conceive a daring 60,000 pound robbery. After pulling off the job, the gang stuffs the loot in a railway station locker. To avoid detection, Guinness convinces the ever-trusting Johnson to pick up the money. Through a series of comic complications, Johnson returns home with a police escort, with neither the woman nor the bobbies suspecting that she's carrying a fortune in her suitcase. Mistakenly believing that Johnson has ratted on them, the gang reluctantly plans to eliminate her... 

Delicious and charming black comedy impeccably directed at Ealing Studios by Alexander MacKendrick. In it we find the usual condiments that defined the productions that came out of the mythical studios: ingenious plots, fine irony, sparkling dialogues, dark humor, picturesque characters and absurd situations.

While London panics in the wake of another murder by Jack the Ripper, a man who identifies himself as Mr. Slade (Laird Cregar) takes a room in the middle-class home of an elderly couple with financial difficulties (Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Sara Allgood). Also living there is their niece Kitty Langley (Merle Oberon), an attractive, flirtatious entertainer making the leap from music halls to more respectable theaters, and the Bible-quoting Slade can barely hide his fascination behind his admonitions of sin and temptation. Atmospheric and creepy, this is one of the great suspense films. Based on the celebrated 1913 horror novel of Marie Belloc Lowndes, the movie memorably captures the panic & paranoia which reigned in London during the Ripper crimes. Using the full palette of shades available to black and white cinematography, the movie creates a chilling, eerie, atmosphere in which one can walk Whitechapel's narrow streets with the murderer.

 La carta

 El oscuro y ponzoñoso melodrama de William Wyler, basado en la novela de W. Somerset Maugham, presenta a Bette Davis interpretando uno de sus personajes más desagradables. La historia comienza a la luz de la luna en una plantación de caucho malaya. Los disparos suenan y un hombre herido, Geoffrey Hammond, sale tambaleándose de un cabaña mientras Leslie Crosbie (Bette Davis) lo sigue fríamente, descargando las balas restantes en su cuerpo. Más tarde le dice a su marido Robert que ella le disparó a Geoffrey, un amigo en común, porque él estaba borracho y trató de aprovecharse de ella. Robert, el dueño de la plantación, cree en su historia y contrata al prestigioso abogado Howard Joyce para defenderla. Pero entonces aparece una carta en la que se revela que Leslie había invitado a Geoffrey a la plantación la noche de su asesinato...

  

 Aún considerando que la película es melodramática y presenta una de esas tramas criminales comunes en los años 40 con sus asesinatos, juicios y un par de mujeres fatales, la obra de Wyler es otro bello testamento de la ingeniosidad del cine de este período, con su magnífica cinematografía y el uso expresionista de la luz y la sombra para aumentar la audacia de la narración. El director hace un gran uso de su escenario en Singapur, abriendo el ambiguo asesinato con un largo travelling que arroja una ominosa luna y la abundante maleza de la jungla, antes de centrarse en el asesinato de Hammond por parte de Leslie. La película es una lección de iluminación, encuadre audaz y uso inteligente de los primeros planos y, aunque el rol está dentro de su especialidad, Bette Davis logra construir un personaje apasionante.

 William Wyler's dark and poisonous melodrama, based on the W. Somerset Maugham novel, features Bette Davis in one of her nastiest roles. The story begins in the shimmering moonlight on a tropical Malayan rubber plantation. Shots ring out and a wounded man, Geoffrey Hammond staggers from a bungalow as Leslie Crosbie (Bette Davis) coldly follows him, pumping the remaining bullets into his body. She later tells her husband Robert that she shot Geoffrey, a mutual friend, because he was drunk and tried to take advantage of her. Robert, who owns the plantation, believes her story and hires high-powered lawyer Howard Joyce to defend her. But then a letter surfaces in which it is revealed that Leslie had invited Geoffrey to the plantation on the night of his murder...

 Yes, the movie is very melodramatic and features one of those perfunctory crime plots common to the 1940s with its murders, court case and pair of  femmes fatales, but it’s still another beautiful testament to the artfulness of filmmaking in this period with its gorgeous cinematography and expressionistic use of light and shade to augment the bold flourishes of the storytelling. Director William Wyler makes great use of his Singapore setting, opening up the ambiguous murder with an extended tracking shot which throws up an ominous moon and the excessive undergrowth of the jungle, before settling on Leslie’s fatal felling of Hammond. The film is a lesson in lighting, bold framing and clever use of close-ups, and though fully within her repertoire, Bette Davis makes her character’s lurid arc absolutely gripping.

Sarah  Morton  es  una  famosa  autora  británica  de  novelas  de  misterio.  Cansada  de Londres y en busca de inspiración para su nueva novela, acepta una oferta de su editor para alojarse en su casa de Luberon, en el sur de Francia. Es temporada baja, y Sarah descubre que el hermoso lugar de campo y el ritmo tranquilo son exactamente lo que necesita, hasta que una noche llega inesperadamente la indolente y despreocupada hija francesa de John, Julie. La reserva inglesa de Sarah se ve sacudida por el estilo de vida temerario y de gran carga sexual de Julie.

Las dos mujeres, el apuesto camarero, las horas de ocio, la piscina: parece, y en ciertomodo lo es, un escenario digno de Eric Rohmer. Pero  el  Sr.  Ozon  es  tan  perverso  como  ingenioso,  así  que  convierte  astutamente  su delicado estudio sobre la rivalidad sexual generacional y transcultural en un thriller de suspense. Hay un misterio que acecha en el pasado de Julie, un cadáver en la caseta de la piscina, una enana enjuta vestida de negro: presagios, premoniciones, sospechas de que las cosas no son lo que parecen.

Swimming Pool, la primera película en inglés del Sr. Ozon (con un poco de francés para darle  color  local),  es  al  mismo  tiempo  una  construcción  completamente  amanerada  y pícaramente artificial y una pieza aguda de realismo psicológico. La psicología de quién, y  la  realidad  de  quién,  sigue  siendo  ambigua  incluso  después  de  la  agria  y  deliciosa vuelta de tuerca final. Luego, la propia historia parece evaporarse como la niebla sobre la  luminosa  superficie  azul  de  la  piscina.  La  película  es  seductoramente  insustancial, como la luz y el aire de ese pueblo. No se puede retener, pero persiste en los sentidos y juega con la memoria.

Sarah  Morton  is  a  famous  British  mystery  author.  Tired  of  London  and  seeking inspiration for her new novel, she accepts an offer from her publisher to stay at his home in Luberon, in the South of France. It is the off-season, and Sarah finds that the beautiful country  locale  and  unhurried  pace  is  just  the  tonic  for  her--until  late  one  night,  when John's indolent and insouciant French daughter Julie unexpectedly arrives. Sarah's prim and steely English reserve is jarred by Julie's reckless, sexually charged lifestyle.

The  two  women,  the  handsome  waiter,  the  hours  of  idleness,  the  swimming  pool:  it sounds like, and on one level is, a scenario worthy of Eric Rohmer.
But Mr. Ozon is as perverse as he is resourceful, so he slyly turns his delicate study in generational and cross-cultural sexual rivalry into a suspense thriller. There is a mystery lurking in Julie's past, a dead body in the pool house, a wizened dwarf all dressed in black: omens, premonitions, suspicions that things are not what they seem.

Swimming Pool, Mr. Ozon's first English-language film (with a bit of French thrown in for local color), is simultaneously a thoroughly mannered, mischievously artificial confection and  an  acute  piece  of  psychological  realism.  Whose  psychology,  and  which  reality, remains  ambiguous  even  after  the  tart,  delicious  final  twist.  After  that,  the  story  itself seems  to  evaporate  like  the  mist  over  the  pool's  luminous  blue  surface.  The  movie  is alluringly insubstantial, like the light and air of the Luberon. You can't hold onto it, but it lingers in your senses and plays tricks with your memory.

Marie, a professor of English literature in a Paris university, has been happily married to Jean for 25 years, although they have no children. During their summer vacations in the southwest of France, Jean leaves Marie sunbathing on the beach and goes to swim in the sea. When Marie turns back, she cannot find Jean. Has he left her? commited suicide? drowned? With no clue and no body to mourn over, Marie acts as her husband was still alive.

{...} Charlotte Rampling displays fascinating vitality playing a woman intent on denying death in her life. She gives an impressive portrayal of Marie’s inner transition, as the character has less and less strength to deny the truth, while gaining the capacity to mourn. In Sous le sable, Charlotte Rampling fully owns the type of role she would go on to play for many years – of an independent, self-confident, sexually attractive, active woman. If Il portiere di notte was the defining role of Rampling’s early career, then Sous le sable can be considered the cusp to its second act.
