Veinticuatro ojos

Abarcando un periodo de veinte años, Veinticuatro ojos cuenta la historia de una joven y brillante profesora, Hisaki Oishi (Hideko Takamine), y la relación que mantiene con su primera clase de doce niños (de ahí el título del film), interpretados de forma encantadora, en distintas etapas de sus vidas, por niños y jóvenes locales no profesionales. Al principio, aunque el anciano director de la escuela (Chishu Ryu) reconoce su talento, la remota comunidad de la isla desconfía de Hisaki. Sin embargo, pronto tanto los niños como los adultos caen bajo el hechizo de esta moderna y testaruda chica de ciudad, solo para ver cómo la inminente guerra cambia irremediablemente sus vidas.

Veinticuatro ojos, que superó a Los siete samuráis de Akira Kurosawa como mejor película de 1954 de la Kinema Junpo y ganó el Globo de Oro a la mejor película extranjera en 1955, es una de las películas más queridas de Japón. En 1999 fue elegida por la crítica japonesa como una de las diez mejores películas japonesas de todos los tiempos. Este film antibélico, de gran éxito comercial y de crítica, ha conseguido, según el crítico Sato Tadao, "arrancar más lágrimas al público japonés que ninguna otra película de posguerra".
El rodaje se inició en 1951, cuando Estados Unidos estaba inmerso en la Guerra de Corea y el militarismo japonés estaba de nuevo en auge. Veinticuatro ojos llegó a redefinir la identidad nacional de Japón con su grito de pacifismo y su reverencia por la inocencia de la juventud.

Twenty-Four Eyes

Spanning a twenty-year period, Twenty-Four Eyes tells the story of a bright young teacher, Hisaki Oishi (Hideko Takamine), and the ongoing relationship she has with her first class of twelve children, charmingly played, at various stages of their lives, by non-professional local children and young adults. At first, although the aging schoolmaster (Chishu Ryu) recognizes her talent, Hisaki is mistrusted by the remote island community, however, soon both children and adults fall under the spell of this modern, headstrong, city-girl only to see the impending war irretrievably change their lives.

Keisuke Kinoshita’s Twenty-Four Eyes — which beat Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai as Kinema Junpo’s Best Film of 1954 and won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film in 1955 — is one of Japan’s most beloved films. In 1999 it was picked by Japanese critics as one of the ten best Japanese films of all time. Both a huge commercial and critical success, this deeply affecting anti-war film has, according to the critic Sato Tadao, “wrung more tears out of Japanese audiences than any other post-war film”.

Filming started in 1951 when the USA was embroiled in the Korean War and Japanese militarism was again on the rise. Twenty-Four Eyes came to redefine Japan’s national identity with its cry for pacifism and its reverence for the innocence of youth.
