Sola en su humilde vivienda de Montevideo, Maria se ocupa de sus tres niños pequeños y de su padre, Agustín, que pierde poco a poco la memoria. Vive agobiadísima, tanto más cuanto que trabaja en casa, mal pagada, para una fábrica textil. El día en que a Agustín le deniegan la plaza en la residencia de ancianos, Maria se derrumba…

A primera vista, el proceso de deterioro físico de Agustín parece sugerir que el título La demora es el más justo para definir el paso del tiempo. Pero su hija María también está en crisis, carga con una vida sin mucho disfrute. Lejos de la idea de familia disfuncional que el cine norteamericano convirtió en sistema férreo de clisés, Rodrigo Plá elige mostrar una familia a través del nexo afectivo. Construye su película exactamente en este punto de interacción, tanto entre estos dos personajes como entre dos tiempos: el vínculo con el pasado de él; el difícil futuro de ella. La precisión narrativa de Plá integra al espectador en esta historia simple donde no hay notas falsas. Y Carlos Vallarino y Roxana Blanco son los grandes artífices de esta despojada y melancólica cotidianeidad devenida espectáculo de lo doméstico. (BAFICI 2012)

The Delay

At first sight Agustín’s physical deterioration seems to suggest that the title The Delay is the most accurate one to define the passing of time. But his daughter María is also in crisis, as she carries a rather joyless life. Far from the notion of dysfunctional family American cinema has transformed into a tight system of clichés, Rodrigo Plá chooses to describe a family through their affectionate bond. He builds his film right at the point of interaction between both the characters and two different times: his connection with the past; her difficult future. Plá’s narrative accuracy gets audiences involved in this simple story with no false notes. And Carlos Vallarino and Roxana Blanco are the great architects of this stripped-down, melancholic everyday life that becomes a show of domestic elements. (BAFICI 2012)
