Primer episodio de la trilogía neorrealista de Rossellini, Roma città aperta ha sido reconocida universalmente como una obra maestra, una suerte de símbolo del neorrealismo. Tras una fría acogida en Italia, la película obtuvo un éxito inmediato en el extranjero, venciendo en el Festival de Cannes de 1946. Aún hoy, la escena de la muerte de Pina-Anna Magnani forma parte del imaginario colectivo. Sobre un guión realizado por Rossellini, Sergio Amidei, Federico Fellini y Celeste Negarville, la película se inspira en la historia verídica del sacerdote Luigi Morosini, torturado y asesinado por los nazis por ayudar a la resistencia. En la Roma del 43 - 44, se entretejen las historias de varias personas relacionadas con la resistencia antinazi.

The first part of Rosselini's neorealist war trilogy, Roma città aperta is universally acknowledged as a masterpiece, a film that virtually symbolizes the whole Neorealist film movement. Greeted coldly in Italy, the film was an immediate success abroad, winning the top award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946; even today, the death scene of Pina- played by Anna Magnani - remains etched in people's minds. With a screenplay by Rossellini, Sergio Amidei, Federico Fellini and Celeste Negarville, the film is based on the true story of Don Luigi Morosini, tortured and killed by the Nazis for his collaboration with the Italian Resistance. In the Rome of 1943 and 1944, the stories of a number of people all involved in the anti-Nazi Resistance movement become inextricably entwined.

Première oeuvre importante d'un grand réalisateur italien. Considéré aujourd'hui comme un chef-d'oeuvre, ce film reconstitue, avec un rare souci de la réalité et avec une passion de la vérité, la vie des résistants italiens. Par suite de conditions matérielles précaires, Roberto Rossellini a suppléé à la pauvreté des moyens techniques par une extraordinaire simplicité d'expression. Il fusionne tous les éléments dont il dispose, prises de vues, rythme des images, musique, pour atteindre au maximum d'authenticité. L'interprétation est remarquable.
